When machining is required it can occur at two points during the production process.

As the chamber rotates the media is lifted up on the rising side and then cascades down from near the top of the chamber. Sintered ceramics are very hard and therefore their machining is an expensive difficult and time consuming process.

Ceramic parts may be effectively machined before the final sintering stage either in the green non sintered powder compact state or in the presintered bisque state. In general it is a continuous machining process that allows a single insert to be engaged in the cut for relatively long periods of time.
